Find water

Trout access points across the NSW Snowy Mountains, Victorian High Country, and Tasmanian highlands, grouped by state. Tap a location to see its hatch chart, live weather and access details.

Access points

Public and permitted access to prime trout water, by state.

Hatch predictor

Pick a location and a month to see the likely hatch and fly suggestions. This is a seasonal model built on water character (alpine freestone, tailwater, valley river, or stillwater) and time of year, not a live entomology feed — use it as a briefing, then read the water on the day.

Regulations

Season structure and bag limits by state, in brief.

Introduced & pest species

What to do if you catch one of these -- rules genuinely differ by state, so we've kept the wording state-specific rather than one blanket rule.

Rules, seasons and bag limits change and vary by specific water. Always confirm current regulations before fishing: NSW DPI Fisheries, Victorian Fisheries Authority, or Fisheries Tasmania (Inland Fisheries Service).

Safety & disclaimer

Tailwater is a planning guide only — it is not a safety authority and does not replace local knowledge or official advice. Always exercise caution in, on and near water: wear a properly fitted personal flotation device (PFD), especially when wading, boating or fishing alone, and never rely on this app's conditions alone before entering the water.

  • Water levels, flow and weather can change quickly and without warning, especially after rain — flash flooding, sudden rises and strong currents are a real risk even on rivers that look calm.
  • Riverbanks, rocks and weed can be slippery; cold water can bring on hypothermia or cramp faster than expected, even in mild weather.
  • Mobile phone reception is limited or unavailable at many of these locations — plan accordingly and carry a means of emergency communication where possible.
  • Always check current conditions, closures, fire bans and access restrictions with the relevant local or park authority before you go, and let someone know where you're fishing and when you expect to return.
  • Hold a valid fishing licence for the relevant state and confirm current season dates, bag and size limits before you fish — see the Regulations tab, and confirm with NSW DPI Fisheries, the Victorian Fisheries Authority, or Fisheries Tasmania (Inland Fisheries Service).
  • Respect private property, landholder access rules and posted signage — some access points border or cross private land.
  • Information in this app (water levels, weather, stocking, hatch predictions and access details) is drawn from third-party sources and provided for general guidance only. It may be delayed, estimated, out of date or inaccurate.

Tailwater is provided free of charge as a general planning aid. No warranty is made as to the accuracy, completeness or currency of any information in this app, and no responsibility or legal liability is accepted for any decision, action, loss, injury or damage arising from your use of this app or your choice of fishing destination.
